You can enjoy a thermal bathing right from your room. The south end of the canyon is cut by a normal fault that drops the bedrock down to the south (it's at the boundary between dark gray Archean rocks and light-colored Paleozoic rocks across the bottom of the view). Or maybe it's just me.

Wind River Hot Springs is in hard to reach location. It formed on the coastline in shallow water at a time when North America was in the tropics near the equator.

Floating on the river between Boysen Dam and the Wedding of the Waters is restricted by the Wind River Indian Reservation. It may not have been the same river elsewhere, but at least here a drainage existed before 70 million years ago.

The thickest cliffs in the canyon are the Mississippian Madison Group, deep marine limestone. From there, the river flows through the Bighorn Basin in north central Wyoming, passing through Thermopolis and Hot Springs State Park. View a map of this area and more on Natural Atlas. Park at the Carson Hot Springs Resort (pay $5) and hike on the trail north.
